The cancer is rarely found in the United States, with less than 5000 victimized people. Generally, the older generation has been found to be the most affected.

Types of Treatment Available

Surgery is the first treatment that the majority of patients go through. The malignant tumor masses are easily removed during surgery. A rather dangerous treatment, sends drugs throughout the body to further reach the cancer areas. Another treatment is using radiation; x-rays in high form. Radiation kills the mesothelioma cells.

Treatment by Chemical is given as a pill to injected into a vein. It can also be injected into the muscle. It is primarily used to target the local area of the tumor. During treatment, patients experience extreme side effects: vomiting, hair loss, nausea, exhaustion, and anorexia. Side effects are harbored specifically with treatments.

Chemotherapy can use a one-pill treatment that has success. Patients have better experiences with this type, also referred to single-agent therapy. Specific agents used are as follows: doxorubicin, carboplatin, mitomucin, cyclophosphamide, Ifosdomide and cisplatin. The response rate to these drugs range depending upon the drug.

A list of the rates follows below along with the related drug:

15% response- doxorubicin, detrorubucin, pirarubicin, and epirubicin.
10%-20%- carboplatin, mitomucin, cyclophosphamide, Ifosdomide and cisplatin.
14%- listed again is cisplatin.
36%- cisplatin, a rare case that lasted two to eight months.

The response rates are proven to be extremely low when using single-agent chemotherapy. Scientists are driven to study a number of treatment combinations for mesothelioma cancer patients. They have increased the response rates up to 44%, but still lack effectiveness. The combination treatments are not being used often enough for dramatic changes, slimming the effects on patients to single-agent therapy. A newer combination showing a 47% response rate uses a more recent agent called gemcitabine. The agent is used in combination with cisplatin. This research was performed in Australia by Australian researchers and has proven survival results with Stage III and IV patients. The research ran for 25 weeks and given a chance for survival at 41%.

Given all the regimes for treating people, new research brings more treatments and the tools needed to perform. Doctors are getting many more patients and better at predicting the appropriate regime for specific patients. Patients are diagnosed based on their age and the cancer stage of Mesothelioma they are in.

Although now we know that asbestos is a carcinogen, it was in widespread use before this finding. This means that numerous buildings, including offices, homes, and schools, all utilized this material before it was banned in the late 1980s. To remove asbestos from buildings or other items, people must wear protective gear.

First, it is important to understand the wide impact of asbestos. It was popular for the construction, automotive, and even shipping industries as an insulator. Asbestos belongs to the silicate family, which means that it resists heat, flame, chemicals, electricity, and biodegradation. On its own, asbestos is a fibrous material that is flexible and has high tensile strength. Thus, it is easily added to other substances to add a bit of extra insulating power.

At one point, this material could be found in everything from vinyl flooring to roof tiles, wall insulation to water pipes. Additionally, it is still a component in brake pads, clutch disks, and brake shoes as well as gaskets. Although it is now banned, asbestos can also be found in older buildings that have not been remodeled or renovated to rid them of this material.

Asbestos does not become dangerous until it begins to release microscopic fibers into the air. From here, you can inhale or ingest the fibers, which may then become lodged in your body’s tissue where it can spur the formation of cancerous tumors. Items containing asbestos that is able to flake off is called friable, while material that cannot release asbestos is called non-friable.

When asbestos is friable, specialized companies must remove it using safety gear to protect them from inhaling or ingesting the fibers. There are several components of safety gear to make sure a person is fully protected, including:

Respirators – these are masks that cover half of the face in order to keep a person from breathing in asbestos fibers.

Coveralls – coveralls that include feet should be worn during contact with asbestos, then thrown away so that stray fibers do not get caught in the clothing to later spread to someone else.

Rubber gloves – strong, disposable gloves keep asbestos fibers from becoming lodged in your skin and causing asbestos warts. Like coveralls, these should be safely thrown away after one use.

Rubber boots – pull-on boots that go over the booties of your coverall protect your feet and lower legs.

Eye gear – wearing ventilated goggles keeps the sensitive tissue of your eyes from suffering from asbestos fibers.

Sadly, protective gear isn’t always enough. Asbestos exposure causes tragic diseases such as lung cancer and mesothelioma. If you or someone you know has suffered from asbestos-related health issues, you should speak to a lawyer about your options.

For more information, call an asbestos attorney from Williams Kherkher today.

Exposure to asbestos has been repeatedly linked to mesothelioma, a connection made as early as 1870 when E. Wagner recognized the disease. Two cases of asbestos-caused mesothelioma were also studied by Joseph Lieutaud via 3,000 autopsies. Though this sickness continued to be studied through 1960s, many fast-growing lung cancers had already been detected before this period. Only after the 1960s did mesothelioma become a well-recognized disease via a report from a South African mining community wherein thirty-three cases of the sickness were identified in persons between the ages of 31 and 68 years old. More cases were also reported from those who lived near the mining facility despite the fact that the patients were not employees of the mining facilities.

Tracing Asbestos‘ Effects

Asbestos, a known biological irritant, was first made for home use, such as insulation, gaskets, flooring and roofing. It was also commonly used for shipbuilding, brake pads and many other products. Because of its widespread usage, the number of asbestos exposure cases have grown over the years, and numerous people have been infected with asbestos-related illnesses. Most of these diseases are life-threatening, which is why many deaths can be traced to the inhalation of asbestos fibers.

The very first recorded diagnosis for an asbestos-related illness was made in 1924. A woman died due to asbestosis. She was working with the deadly material when she was a teenager. Given that the dormancy stage of the disease lasts for years, her body succumbed to asbestosis when she was only 23. Soon after, other diseases like mesothelioma and lung cancer were linked to asbestos exposure, explaining why there were so many “young deaths” years before the first case of asbestosis was discovered.

There are three main types of malignant mesothelioma, which is diagnosed based on a biopsy of tumor cell samples. About 50% to 70% of mesothelioma are the epithelioid type. This type has the best outlook for survival or prognosis. The other two types are the sarcomatoid type (7%-20%), and the mixed/biphasic type (25%-30%). Treatment options for all three types are the same. Unfortunately, the overall prognosis for patients with malignant mesothelioma remains poor.

In 1931, the government made laws that covered “asbestos diseases,” naming them as valid excuses to be absent from work. The need for ventilation was also stressed by such laws, which is why organizations that work with asbestos are required to increase workspace and provide equipment for ventilation.

The Inception of Asbestos Lawyers

As asbestos health hazards quickly became known to the public, many companies who manufactured and distributed asbestos tried to conceal the truth about asbestos and even withheld information showing that asbestos was present in their workspaces. This paved the way for more people to become asbestos victims. Thereafter, lawsuits were brought against a number of the companies, but some of them failed to bring justice to the victims.

Lawyers began to form groups dedicated to regulating the use of asbestos and defending asbestos victims. There were more courtroom victories for the victims and, as a result, laws limiting the use of asbestos were finally passed.

This is a very painful and costly illness. The settlement can help ease the burden brought about the disease by helping patients with their treatment and other medical fees. It will also provide the families left behind by mesothelioma victims with financial security. Victims of this disease can turn to specialized mesothelioma lawyers to claim due compensation for their suffering by filing a lawsuit against the asbestos company that caused their disease.

There are two types of mesothelioma lawsuits. The first is the personal injury lawsuit where the victim, or the person diagnosed with the disease, is living and files the lawsuit himself. The second is the wrongful death lawsuit wherein the spouse or the family of the person who passed away due to the illness files the lawsuit and represent the diseased.

Mesothelioma cases generally take a year to be completed, and it takes a couple of months, sometimes a number of years, for the company to pay the settlement after the amount is agreed on by both sides. But when the company declares bankruptcy, the plaintiff, unfortunately, gets nothing. But the figure is encouraging. There is am overwhelming number of documented successful cases against asbestos manufacturing companies. The settlement amount paid by companies ranges from a hundred thousand to a couple of million dollars.

One example of the many successful mesothelioma lawsuits is the case of Caldo vs. John Crane, Inc. (2005, San Francisco Superior Court, Case No. 412325)

Mr. Caldo was a navy mechanist and an engineering officer exposed to asbestos made by John Crane, Inc. Mr. Caldo was responsible for removing and installing pump and valve packing and gaskets during his naval career. All through his working years, Mr. Caldo was exposed with airborne asbestos from the thermal insulation, packing, and gaskets in the engine rooms of ships. At 60, he was diagnosed with Pleural mesothelioma. He filed a case against the manufacturer, John Crane, Inc. and the jury returned a verdict of $8.6 million in his favor. This settlement amount enabled him to live comfortably the remaining days of his life. Although the disease eventually took his life, he was able to secure the future of his family.

Another successful mesothelioma lawsuit was filed by Mr. Hoeffer against Rockwell Automation. (2003, San Francisco Superior Court, Case No. 28817)

As an electrician for most his life, Mr. Hoeffer was constantly exposed with asbestos contained in the electrical equipment he worked with. After he was diagnosed with Pleural mesothelioma, he filed a lawsuit against Rockwell for its defective products and negligence. The company held out from agreeing on a settlement. In the end, the jury awarded $2,999,543 to the 74 year old retired electrician.

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer, caused by previous exposure to asbestos. In this deadly disease, cancerous (malignant) cells develop in the mesothelium, a protective lining that covers most organs of the body. The most common site of cancerous cells accumulation is the pleura (outer lining of the lungs and chest cavity), but it may also occur in the lining of the abdominal cavity (called peritoneum) or the pericardium (a sac that surrounds the heart).

Mesothelioma diagnose is often difficult from two reasons.

Its symptoms are quite similar to those of a number of other common condition conditions. No very special concerns when people experience persistent coughing, shortness of breath, chest pain and palpitations, fever, difficulty swallowing. These symptoms are typical of far more common diseases such as pneumonia. Only a previous exposure to asbestos may increase clinical suspicion for mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma has a very long latency time period (time between getting the cancer and feeling the symptoms of it). It can stay dormant in your body for many years, displaying symptoms that doesn’t require a special medical attention. Many times mesothelioma is diagnosed to late, when treatment methods loses the main capacity of cure.

Currently, is not completely proven why asbestos leads cancer in the mesothelial cells. On the other hand it is still undeterminated how many fibers are needed to be inhaled in order that the cancer tumor to be live. Getting mesothelioma is in close relation on asbestos exposure duration and on the environmental concentration of asbestos as well. Body resistance plays also an important role in mesothelioma equation. It is possible to get mesothelioma from as little as a couple of months of asbestos exposure or it would take few years of asbestos inhalation to cause cancer.

Very important for potential mesothelioma patients is to associate the above symptoms with their occupational history. If those symptoms overlap a previous asbestos exposure, the respective person must ask a special medical investigation.

Not everyone understands what asbestosis is or what causes it. Those at high risk are shipyard workers, mill works, and miners. The risk extends to those living in the areas surrounding these sites and to family members of asbestos workers.

Individuals who were led to believe that their work environment was safe when asbestos was present might be eligible for compensation for suffering and medical bills. The side effects from the asbestosis may start as a dry cough but can eventually lead to breathing problems and serious conditions such as cancer. It is important to make sure that you consult with a doctor if you start to experience the signs and symptoms of asbestosis.

Visible signs of asbestosis do not generally appear for decades following the exposure. Malignant pleural mesothelioma affects about 3,000 people a year in the U.S. The time lag between exposure to asbestos and the diagnosis of the disease can be as long as 30 to 40 years. Mesothelioma is a deadly disease. It generally occurs in one side of the thoracic cavity. Mesothelioma occurs in men with much greater frequency than it occurs in women.

Unfortunately, by the time most mesotheliomas are diagnosed, patients have multiple small nodules studding the pleural surfaces. As time progresses, the nodules combine to form solid tumors encasing the lung, like the rind on an orange. Symptoms may include shortness of breath, cough, chest pain, and weight loss. If you believe you have been exposed to asbestos, it is vital to look for these types of symptoms. It is also important to determine whether there is any chance that you have been exposed to asbestos.

Currently, there are no known cures for asbestosis, but there are treatments that can help control the symptoms. Medication is usually the first treatment, along with breathing exercises. Be sure that you maintain your treatment and visit your doctor for routine checkups. In addition, it is important have cancer screens on a regular basis.

Asbestosis is a serious condition. If you have never been exposed to asbestos, avoid areas that you believe may contain this material. If you feel that you may have symptoms associated with asbestosis, be sure to visit a doctor immediately. Prompt medical evaluation and aggressive treatment can lead to prolonged survival and/or successful treatment of symptoms.

According to statistics, more than 30% of Americans suffering from mesothelioma–a deadly asbestos-induced lung cancer–were exposed to asbestos while serving their country. Veterans and shipyard workers face the greatest risk of developing mesothelioma or similar diseases because of the extensive use of asbestos in military equipment and products, buildings, ships, and submarines. This is especially true for veterans who served during or after World War II and before the1970s when the government began regulating use of asbestos.

Sadly, hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of American veterans have suffered exposure to asbestos, putting them at higher risk of developing asbestosis, mesothelioma, or other illness.

Veterans who have been diagnosed with an asbestos-induced lung cancer such as mesothelioma have legal rights and may be able to recover compensation for their losses and suffering. Only an experienced mesothelioma lawyer will know if you have a valid legal claim.

The Risk for Navy Veterans

Asbestos-induced lung cancer is a significant problem among Navy veterans, particularly because the use of asbestos was so very extensive on ships. Virtually no area on a Navy ship built before the 1970s is safe including:

·	Fire and engine rooms

·	Boiler rooms

·	Navigation rooms

·	Mess halls

·	Sleeping quarters

Additionally, commonly used products such as gaskets, cables, insulation, adhesives, valves, and numerous others contained asbestos. Navy veterans, like other veterans, were prone to carry asbestos dust home on their clothes, thereby exposing their loved ones to the dangerous fibers.

Veterans’ Rights

Veterans groups across the country have started taking action to ensure their rights are protected. For instance, some veterans organizations have called on Congress to fund early lung cancer detection programs, which is especially important given the long latency period for mesothelioma–usually 30 to 50 years. Individual veterans, and, in some cases, their families, are filing legal claims to hold responsible parties accountable for the suffering caused by asbestos-induced lung disease.

Mesothelioma lawsuits are becoming more and more common. Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that occurs mostly through exposure to asbestos. If someone develops this type of cancer, it’s a good bet he or she was exposed to cancer at some time in his or her past.

The cancer develops in the mesothelium. The mesothelium is the tissue that lines our organs. It lines the pleural cavity (chest area), peritoneum (abdominal cavity) and pericardium (heart cavity). Mesothelioma has a very long latency period. It takes a while for the cancer to show up – about 40-45 years and is very fatal.

Lawsuits can be filed against employers especially if they knew that there was asbestos present on a job site. How do you know if you have grounds for a lawsuit? Just having mesothelioma is not grounds for a lawsuit. There are certain factors to be considered:

Statute of Limitations

You must file a claim within a few years of contracting mesothelioma. If you are the executor of an estate, you must file within a very short time of the victim’s death.

Where were you exposed to Asbestos?

You must be able to pinpoint the exact location where you think you were exposed.

Who is responsible?

As long as you can identify the location or building or job site, lawyers will be able to identify who is responsible.

How much compensation can you win?

Mesothelioma lawsuits can bring compensation ranging from several hundred thousands to millions depending on the respondent’s ability to pay.

Let’s hope no one ever develops this aggressive cancer, but if you do, keep in mind that a mesothelioma lawsuit is an option you should consider to not only help defray medical costs, but in the event of your passing, you will be able to provide for your heirs
